Hohokam Petroglyph Discovery Trail
We explored the ruins of Millville and found the Hohokam Petroglyphs just past the ruins. The 2.5 mile hike was pretty with the weather in the low 50s. We were able to find a good amount of Petroglyphs up on the hill and on some rocks along the path. The fall is the best time to see these Petroglyphs but allow at two hours to find them all.
History:
Humans have inhabited the San Pedro Valley since Clovis times 13,000 years ago. You can see traces of these early settler’s at Murray Springs. Here at Millville are remnants of the Hohokam culture. These tribes grew corn in the valley from about A.D. 500 to A.D. 1400. Their traces are seen in the petroglyphs found at twelve different sites along the river. These Millville petroglyphs are some of the most accessible.
The most obvious of these looks a bit like a child's "hopscotch" figure. There are also spirals and other geometrics, and something that looks like a deer or antelope.
